Autonomic Nervous System Testing

ثبت نشده
چکیده

A utonomic nervous system testing is used to document diabetic autonomic failure. Diabetic autonomic failure is defined as impaired function of the peripheral autonomic nervous system and can be divided into two categories: 1) autonomic neuropathy, in which there is a structural lesion of the peripheral autonomic neuron and 2) functional autonomic failure, in which no known structural lesion occurs. In addition to the classic neurotransmitters (acetylcholine and norepinephrine), newer neurotransmitters and neuromodulators such as substance P, neuropeptide K, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and nitric oxide are also involved. Also, the adrenal medullae are an integral part of the autonomic nervous system. With these caveats, the following definition is proposed, wherein autonomic abnormalities are classified as structural or functional with further subdivisions based on the overt or subclinical nature of the disorder, the specific subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system, and the specific organ systems involved.

Assessment of autonomic nervous system function in patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis

Automatic dysfunction may contribute to the hemodynamic disturbances in cirrhosis. Tests of autonomic function were performed in 31 patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis and 30 healthy subjects. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to child- Pugh,s classification ( A.B.C). The patients with moderate and severe cirrhosis( child B,C) had significant parasympathetic disturbance ( in the v...

Autonomic nervous system testing may not distinguish multiple system atrophy from Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND Formal laboratory testing of autonomic function is reported to distinguish between patients with Parkinson's disease and those with multiple system atrophy (MSA), but such studies segregate patients according to clinical criteria that select those with autonomic dysfunction for the MSA category. OBJECTIVE To characterise the profiles of autonomic disturbances in patients in whom th...

Associations Between Resting Heart Rate and Antisocial Behavior

Studies testing the relationship between autonomic nervous system function as indexed by low resting heart rate and antisocial behavior have found that low resting heart rate is positively correlated with a wide range of antisocial behavior measures. The aim of this review was to assess the influence of heart rate (HR) level and HR variability (HRV) on the relationship between behavioral variab...
